Walking home after dark: 7 things that bring you peace of mind

Most evening walks home are completely ordinary. And that's exactly why we tend to leave them to chance: headphones in, eyes on the phone, keys somewhere at the bottom of the bag. Peace of mind doesn't come from fear, but from a few small habits you've got on autopilot. Here are seven that are worth it.
1. Decide on your route before you leave
The shortest way isn't always the best. Pick a route with light, people and places that are open. If it goes through a park or an underpass, go around it instead, even if that means five extra minutes. A decision made in advance is one you don't have to make when you're tired.
2. Keep one ear free
Music or a podcast are lovely, but leave one earbud out. It's not about hearing „danger“, it's about being aware of what's happening around you: footsteps, a car slowing down, someone walking at the same pace as you.
3. Phone in your hand, not in your eyes
Send that text while you're still standing under the streetlight, then lock the phone. Someone who looks ahead and walks with purpose comes across completely differently from someone who can't tear their eyes off the screen.
4. Let someone know
„Heading out, I'll be home in 20 minutes“ is one message. Sharing your location with your partner, your mum or a friend isn't paranoia, it's a normal thing most people around you use today.
5. Keep something on you that works right away
Unlocking your phone under stress is hard. A spray you have to pull out, aim and hit the target. That's why a personal alarm has worked so well for us: one pull and a 130 dB siren with a flashing light alerts everyone nearby. You don't have to aim, you don't have to fight, you just set it off. Clip it to your keys or the zip of your bag so you can reach it without searching.
6. Keys ready before you reach the door
Searching for your keys at the entrance is the moment when you're standing still, not paying attention and your hands are full. Take them out on the way. Bonus: if you have an alarm on your keys, it's in your hand exactly when it makes the most sense.
7. Trust your gut
If something feels off, you don't have to be able to explain it. Cross to the other side of the street, step into a shop, call someone. No one will judge you for being careful. And that feeling of having the situation in your hands is exactly the point.
None of this is about fear. It's about being able to head out anywhere in the evening and feel sure of yourself while you do.
